UNOGWAJA CHALLENGE 2013The Unogwaja challenge was initiated to follow the footsteps of Comrades legend Phil Masterton-Smith, who was affectionately known as “Unogwaja” which means the Hare in Zulu. In 1933 Masterton-Smith couldn’t afford the train fare from Cape Town to run the Comrades Marathon, so he cycled over 1700kms from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg, and then ran the gruelling Comrades Marathon and came in 10th position.
This ultimate story of passion, willpower, courage and determination was mirrored in 2011 by four young men, who followed in the footsteps of Phil Masterton-Smith 78 years later. Team Unogwaja succeeded in cycling 1677km’s in 10 days from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg, and then running the Ultimate Human Race on day 11.
Team Unogwaja will depart from Southern Sun Waterfront Hotel in Cape Town on Thursday 23rd May and cycle to Pietermaritzburg spreading the Comrades story and spirit along the way. If all goes to plan, they will arrive in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday 1st June 2013. They will then run the 89km Comrades Marathon on Sunday 2nd June with thousands of other runners from all over South Africa and around the world!
Every pedal and step towards the Comrades Marathon finish line will be in support of thier chosen charities which are: The six Comrades Amabeadibeadi Charities and Jumping Kids.
Please specify in your message of support when making your donation which charity you'd like to support or else the donation will be split equally between the 7 charities. Every little bit helps! No matter how big or small, it all makes a difference!
